flesh world is a dream punk group formed in the summer of 2012 in san francisco. the quartet includes scott moore (guitar, synths) jess scott (vocals, guitar) andrew luttrell (bass, backing vocals) sam lefebvre (drums). jess and scott met while loitering around the panhandle district, listening to records, gossiping, and playing live shows around town with their bands (scott plays in hardcore group limp wrist and jess played in the indie pop band brilliant colors).

under the glow of moonlight, zak damundo has arrived on the cold busted label scene with his fantastic debut album 3am. the alias of san francisco dj / producer zach devincent, zak damundo presents eighteen original and sampled beats that are mixed continuously in the physical realm (cd and vinyl), but also available digitally as individual cuts. an underground dance music veteran, devincent is the host of swim on digitally imported radio, an affiliate of the bay area�s independent hip hop tv program distortion 2 static, and has released tunes for the likes of 5 and dime recordings, acryl music, looq records, and open bar music.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. al lover�s double album release zodiak versions on hoga nord rekords (2015) opened up for a beautiful cooperation between the label and the artist and now the two parts are taking it to the next level with the release of the nymphaea caerulea ep. on this picture disc ep, a third player flavors the music and that is cairo liberation front (clf).

it�s hard to get a handle on nigerian musicians nash dodoo, charlie cuul and jonas caulley. in 1980 they released an album of face-melting gospel boogie as the bml chapels. and in the same year, calling themselves the beta yama group, they put out free love, a belated love letter to san francisco�s summer of love and an album altogether focused on more worldly concerns. free love is a small slice of haight-ashbury transported to the polygram studios in lagos. �te revoir� is mamas and papas jamming with sergeant pepper�s beatles. �free love� offers a respectful nod towards je t�aime-era serge gainsbourg. sure, �revolution� gets hard and funky and �rain� flirts briefly with a calypso reggae sound, but the majority of the album is cheesecloth and flowers in your hair. insanely rare � and worth buying for the freaky cover art alone � free love is a funky, reverb heavy call for love, peace and sweet, sweet loving. what more could you want from an album?

matrixxman has been a dekmantel regular for a couple of years now. the san francisco producer continues to impress with a new triptych for dekmantel records. over the course of three eps (rhythm, acid, polyphony), charles mccloud duff displays his versatile and original take on house and techno. the concept of the triptych is to explore the range within the confines of a particular limitation. this second ep sector ii: acid- shows an exercise in acid. similarly, the tb-303 may conjure certain knee-jerk reactions at a glance, but acid has the potential to cover a broader palette of emotion than one might initially expect. sector ii holds three squirming 303 sequences and the classic rhythmic drum programming of arrival, bad acid and i am matrix. rites on the other hand is more subtle and fluent, swinging with hazy acid flourishes and dynamic syncopation.

spring theory alumni sage caswell returns to the san francisco-based label to deliver his debut album hoop earring. it s an enigmatic record that comes from the producer s own movement through personal transformation. it follows 2015�s sleep quarters , caswell s introspective label debut, and offers 10 tracks spread out across two 12-s. hoop earring is heavily informed by surrealist visions and archetypal images from caswell�s past that have crystallized within the context of this longplay album. hoop earring successfully paints images with broad brushstrokes and allegorical song titles that allows one to fill in fine details of a landscape built within the framework ten songs. �ray of light 95�� alludes to a moment in time that smartly places you alongside an adolescent caswell while songs like �here we guard upon the soul� land locks squarely in the middle with a poignant, nail-on-the-head statement. -zora scales (step 1)- provides a focal reference to the fantasy world that this album might be the soundtrack to.

landing straight after 415-pr10, public releases first in a loose series of san francisco-centric compilations, this three-track 12inch is a further exploration of the bay areas sounds and aesthetics, though here its explored via remixes produced by friends from abroad. the a-side is a complete overhaul, reimagining, and extension of anonstops seaside by thee loving hand, tim goldsworthys solo moniker of choice these days. the ex-dfa records co-founder and former member of unkle took the tunes balearic foundation and used it as a bed for what one might mistake as a lost arthur russell cut from the world of echo era. joel wells lent his airy, light, sweet vocals to the track, while darren morris added synth work to bolster tim�s usual production genius. it�s carefree and emotive, the aural equivalent of a big, toothy smile. the flip features a mix thats a whole helluva lot more intense and uptempo, though no less positive than its original. chidas remix of domination is squarer and housier than beziers piece, which was glitzy classic disco dunked in italo, but enough of it remains to be unmistakably a spinoff. fiery and propulsive in the way a gulfstream jet is, its a ball of thunder that will electrify any set, any dance floor.
